Burst pipes

Burst pipes can cause enormous damage to a building and its contents. What’s more, burst pipes and leaks can be difficult to fix and involve digging up lawns, paving and tarmac. They are most likely to burst during cold spells when water freezes in the pipe, causing it to expand and crack. When the ice thaws, water will pour from the cracks.

Homeowners and landlords can prevent burst pipes by, amongst other things, insulating lofts and the sides of water tanks What improvements are eligible under Green Deal?.

However, in an actual burst or frozen water pipe emergency, turn off the water supply. First, turn off the main stop tap which is usually under the kitchen sink. Then, turn off the stopcock in the cold water tank, often located in the loft.

Or, take the easy option, and buy a Floodcheck from gas-elec. This 'smart' leak detection device automatically turns off a building’s water supply if there is a burst pipe, leak or when the air around Floodcheck drops below 3 deg Celsius.
