Case Study: Faulty boiler installations in dozens of NI flats

A potentially lethal carbon monoxide (CO) problem in Northern Ireland (NI) was solved by discussions between gas-elec group's local engineer, our head of gas training and a major boiler manufacturer. Thirty flats in a block of 60 were discovered to have the same installation fault relating to lack of sealing to the flue condensate drain, which allowed CO to seep back into the building.

gas-elec group was called in because the gas company had cut off the supply; their emergency engineer had found a gas leak and detected CO. gas-elec group was asked to investigate the gas leak and the source of the CO. "As soon as I heard which boiler was involved, I knew what to look for," said our gas-elec group engineer.

He had earlier come across the same fault in a block of flats - ironically - to install a gas-fired power station. Because there was no trap or seal on the flue condensate drain, fumes were entering the room rather than venting outside. "It's an installation mistake that would not be made by a competent installer but can be missed by someone who does not have the resources of a company like gas-elec group - (i.e. CO detectors and skilled engineers both on the ground and back in the training centre.)"

The boilers were not faulty; just wrongly installed. Thus the manufacturer took a bit of persuading from gas-elec group's head of gas training that there was a problem. Their feeling was that anybody with any sense should know that the flue should be sealed off so it didn't vent back into the room, which was why their installation instructions stopped short of that point.

The result has been that dozens of installations in the NI area have now been investigated, found to be faulty and made safe. "Anybody competent could have found this defect," said our engineer. "It was the gas supplier who detected the CO, but it was gas-elec group that identified the problem."
