Enhanced Electrical Safety Inspection - E2
A visual and electrical inspection of up to six domestic appliances and an earth loop test to 50% of the sockets within the property.
Case Study: Every metal case appliance in the kitchen was live
This is an extract from an email sent to Michael O’Flynn, Group Electrical Manager, by a gas-elec engineer who was sent to a property to investigate why the tenants were receiving electric shocks from the kitchen appliances.
"The tenants were receiving electric shocks from the washing machine and kitchen appliances.
Hazard No 1 - the ringmain was found to be broken with evidence of a cable removed from the circuit. Sockets were now running as 2 radial circuits.
Hazard No 2 - one side feeding the lounge giving adequate Zs loop impedance readings from the sockets. The other side feeding the kitchen had a disconnected earth at the first socket in the circuit, so all sockets in the kitchen did not have an earth return path.
Hazard No 3 - the gas boiler spur on the kitchen circuit also had a disconnected earth. Unfortunately the earth was resting on the live conductor.
These hazards combined led to a lethal combination where the earth connection to all kitchen sockets was live. Every metal case appliance was live, causing the tenant to receive electric shocks.
It was extremely fortunate that nobody was seriously injured on this occasion.
There can be no higher reason why gas-elec carries out electrical safety inspections."
